Practical information

Getting to Sandsend is straightforward, with regular bus services from Whitby and other nearby towns. If you’re driving, there’s ample parking in Sandsend (have some change with you for the parking meters). At the end of your walk, Whitby is well-connected by public transport, so you can easily return to Sandsend or continue your journey elsewhere.

We usually plan the walk so we start at the Sandsend Café just opposite the beach (Check out Chine Cottage holiday rental just opposite, if you were considering accommodation near to Whitby) and near the car parking on the side of the road. We grab a coffee and a sausage butty here to sit in and watch the world go by (people on the beach out of the windows!). Or get the kids an ice cream here before heading off down the beach to Whitby.

You will need good footware for the beach i.e walking boots, wellies or similar. There is plenty of water and surface run-offs etc. that you need to cross and you can quickly get your shoes wet.

Great for dog walking (Check dog restrictions that may applie during certain times).

Once at Whitby we usually head for our Fish and Chips before heading back along the beach to the car. A great way to walk off our dinner!

To ensure a safe and enjoyable walk, check the tide times before setting off (Sandsend and Whitby are the same tide times), as certain parts of the beach may be inaccessible at high tide. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy footwear, as some sections of the path can be uneven.
